On the path of exploring green building and sustainable development, universities are pioneers of innovation, while the support of industry provides a solid foundation for the implementation of these innovations. The Sustainable Future Challenge ( SFC ) is a global team competition for universities worldwide, aiming to respond to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and China's "dual-carbon" strategy. It is an upgraded version of the International Solar Decathlon (SDC), which is known as the "Olympics" of the solar energy industry.
The MESH project was jointly established by Soochow University, the China-Portugal Joint Laboratory for Cultural Heritage Protection Science under the Belt and Road Initiative of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, and the University of Évora in Portugal . Kailun Group provided roofing products and technical support for this project.
The MESH project mainly includes outdoor activity areas, a main living space on the first floor, and a second-floor rest roof. The total building area is 136 square meters, with a net indoor area of 110 square meters. Positioned as a zero-energy eco-friendly guesthouse, the solar- powered building reduces reliance on traditional energy sources and minimizes environmental impact. It comprehensively considers the building's energy needs, renewable energy utilization, and energy efficiency, and, combined with an excellent thermal envelope design, achieves carbon neutrality throughout the building's entire life cycle .
The roof structure is supported by claw-shaped and V-shaped columns, which connect to the roof rafters , all made of high-performance raw bamboo. Due to its proximity to a bird sanctuary, a C1 waterproof design is used. Thick, anti-corrosion pine sheathing boards are connected to the orthogonal rafters, and then Canlon® Fusion® TMP composite tiles are laid on top of the sheathing boards . As a fully welded roof, it effectively eliminates the risk of leakage associated with dry drilling.

Meanwhile, the roof is covered with steel keel and wood-plastic composite panels, and the photovoltaic tiles for power supply are connected to the upper layer by battens. It is walkable, can be used for events and sightseeing, and can also be opened for maintenance. The drainage adopts the "four waters returning to the hall" concept, with internal drainage, rainwater chain, permeable paving bricks and shallow water storage layer.

Li Zhongren, President of Canlon, and Soochow University
Professor Guo Xiaoping of Gold Mantis Architecture Academy shared his experiences in cooperation.
As the industry's first product to deeply integrate polymer waterproofing materials and metal panels, and winner of the China Patent Award Gold Medal , TMP integrated panels signify Canlon's outstanding originality and competitiveness in the metal enclosure system niche market. This application to the MESH project will achieve integrated corrosion and waterproofing, effectively extending roof life and matching the entire lifecycle of photovoltaic modules.

Canlon craftsmen are working on the project's roof.
This project, integrating technological innovation and ecological concepts, has now been completed. In the future, Canlon will continue to collaborate with universities and partners from all sectors, using technology as its driving force to empower innovative practices and contribute to building a beautiful China where humanity and nature coexist harmoniously!
