As Typhoon "White Dolphin" Passes, Canlon Proves Its Strength in Building Waterproofing

Recently, Typhoon "White Dolphin," the 11th typhoon of the year, made landfall twice along the coast of Zhejiang Province, bringing torrential rains and gale-force winds as it moved northward. Its impact extended across Zhejiang, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei, Henan, Hebei, and beyond. Meteorological forecasts indicate that after its remnant system combines with cold air, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and Liaoning will also experience significant rainfall.

Typhoons test not only a city's drainage infrastructure but also push building roofing systems to their limits. Intense rainfall combined with instantaneous gale-force winds subjects roofs to immense water pressure and powerful wind uplift forces equivalent to a Category 17 super typhoon—any weak link can lead to leakage or even structural failure.

In this extreme weather challenge, Canlon's polymer waterproofing systems delivered a performance that stands up to scrutiny.


Part 1: Data Proves It—Wind Uplift Resistance Meets Category 17 Typhoon Standards

A typhoon's destructive force on roofs comes not only from rainwater infiltration but also from the "wind uplift" generated by high-velocity winds. If a roofing system lacks sufficient wind uplift resistance, the membrane may be torn off, or the entire roof structure may be ripped apart.

Canlon was the first waterproofing material manufacturer to establish a wind uplift testing laboratory, conducting systematic tests on roof systems for air tightness, water tightness, and wind uplift capacity. Laboratory tests show that TPO/PVC membranes produced at Canlon's polymer industrial park achieved wind uplift resistance ratings of 11.5KPa and 9.3KPa respectively—equivalent to withstanding the extreme wind pressure of a Category 17 typhoon. The products have an exposed service life exceeding 25 years, far surpassing national standard requirements.

Canlon's independently developed TMP® Integrated Panel System has passed both dynamic and static wind uplift tests in the laboratory, undergoing thousands of cycles under negative pressure conditions up to 10KPa, providing ample safety margin for roofing systems.


Part 2: Field Validation—Real-World Tests Under Typhoons Doksuri and Yagi

Beyond laboratory data, Canlon products have proven their reliability through multiple super typhoon encounters.

In 2023, Typhoon Doksuri (the 5th typhoon of the year) made landfall in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, with maximum sustained winds of 50 m/s (Category 15 strength) . Numerous steel structures and metal roofs in the area sustained severe damage, with many residents reporting that "windows were blown away," and even the steel roofs of some large public buildings were torn apart.

Yet the roof of the Shishi Garment City Art Exhibition Center in Quanzhou remained completely intact. This project utilized Canlon's TMP® Integrated Panel System on both upper and lower layers of its roof envelope. After the typhoon passed, Canlon personnel inspected the site and found that while trees had been uprooted around the building, the roof system showed "not a single trace of damage".

In 2024, Typhoon Yagi became the strongest typhoon to make landfall in China since 2014. In Wenchang City, Hainan Province, over 25,000 houses were damaged, with Lingao County alone reporting direct economic losses of approximately 9.649 billion yuan. However, the roof of the Hainan Hangxin High-Tech Industrial Park, constructed using Canlon's TMP® Integrated Panel System, successfully withstood Yagi's assault—once again validating the system's reliability under extreme weather conditions.

Additionally, the Zhoushan Qingshan Group TMP Composite Tile Project has successively withstood Typhoons Haikui, Jongdari, and Gemi. Canlon's TMP® system has also contributed to the development of Hainan Province's metal roofing technical standards, addressing the region's unique challenges of "high temperature, high humidity, high salinity, high radiation, heavy rainfall, and frequent typhoons" with performance far exceeding standard requirements.

Part 3: Beyond Wind Resistance—System-Level Waterproofing Reliability

Typhoon waterproofing is a multi-front battle. Under torrential rain, roofs must not only "withstand the wind" but also "keep out the water."

Canlon's PVC membranes have undergone 12,000 hours of accelerated weathering testing and achieve wind uplift resistance of 9.3KPa, with core performance indicators far exceeding national standards. They effectively resist typhoon attacks and provide 25-year full-lifecycle protection for industrial plants, photovoltaic roofs, and other applications. In projects such as the Nongfu Spring Dujiangyan Qingcheng Mountain Production Base, Canlon's PVC membranes have withstood the dual challenges of high-cleanliness production environments and extreme weather, earning the 2025 Jinyu Award Gold Medal.

The rain and wind brought by Typhoon "White Dolphin" will eventually pass, but building waterproofing is a long-term commitment spanning decades.
